Improved Project Management Skills

The PMP certification exam tests your competency in various project management areas. As such, you must study and ensure you are updated on the latest principles. It requires a strong knowledge of the Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide. It is the go-to source for project managers and identifies twelve key principles of Project Management. The Guide is structured around eight Project Management domains and addresses evolving needs. The exam also tests your ability to apply industry-standard practices.

The rigorous study before exams furthers your understanding of the best practices. You'll also build your knowledge of project management tools, processes, and approaches. The better you hone your skills, the better you can plan for and execute projects.

Better Career Prospects

What is the PMP Certification Process?

So, how does a project management professional get the PMP certification? Let's explore the process of getting PMP certification.

1. Check Your Eligibility for Certification

The first thing to do is confirm whether you are eligible for PMP certification. You must validate your experience and education before taking the certification exam. There are three sets of qualifications that you can meet before starting the process.

Set A requirements

You must have the following educational background and work experience:

  • High school or secondary school diploma
  • Minimum 60 months/5 years experience leading and managing projects within the past eight years
  • 35 hours of project management education/training.

You can substitute the 35 hours with the following:

  • CAPM certification or
  • PMI Authorized On-Demand PMP Exam Prep
  • Instructor-Led PMP course

Set B requirements

You must have the following educational background and work experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher (or global equivalent)
  • 36 months/3 years experience leading and managing projects within the past 8 years
  • 35 hours of project management education/training.

You can substitute the 35 hours requirement with the following:

  • CAPM certification
  • PMI Authorized On-Demand PMP Exam Prep
  • Instructor-Led PMP course

Set C requirements

You must have the following educational background and work experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher (or global equivalent) from a GAC-accredited program
  • 24 months experience leading and managing projects within the past eight years
  • 35 hours of project management training (GAC core project management coursework is pre-approved to fulfill this requirement)

2. Apply for the PMP Examination

The first step in applying for the PMP exam is to open a PMI account. You'll use it to access the PMI website. Second, submit a completed application with the necessary documents through the website. The organization will assess your documents and inform you whether you qualify. They'll then send you instructions on how to schedule an exam.

Your documentation must include proof of your experience in past projects and training. You must have documented some of the following:

  • Projects you've managed
  • Former employers, your role and responsibilities, duration of projects
  • Training you've completed
  • Institutions attended, courses completed, qualifying hours

Here are some tips to help you finish the application process effectively:

  • Open a PMI.org user account before starting the application process
  • Provide everything needed in the application checklist
  • Focus on your role and responsibility and not the project itself
  • Take your time and double-check the documents

3. Pay and Schedule the Exam

Congratulations on your application being accepted! Now, you must pass the eligibility audit by providing the following:

  • A copy of your degree
  • Experience verification signed by a supervisor
  • Certification or proof of 35 hours of project management education or CAPM certification

You can then pay the course fee and schedule your exam. Remember to choose whether you want to take it in person or online.

4. Prepare for Your PMP Certification Examination

It is always good to prepare for any test. You can study at your own pace and either independently or via structured coursework. You can find various materials on the Project Management Institute website. Becoming a member gives you access to exclusive material and networking. For example, you can find accredited training centers providing PMP preparation courses.

5. Take the PMP Certification Exam

It's time to sit for the exam! About half of the 180 questions represent predictive project management approaches. The remaining half will represent agile or hybrid approaches. You'll handle five unscored pretests, and 175 scored questions in 230 minutes. You can take the exam in any of the 16 available languages.

You can take the exam in person at a Pearson Vue Testing Center or securely online. If you fail, you have only three attempts yearly.

So, what is in the PMP exam? The questions fall into three domains:

  • People: It includes questions about leading and building teams, solving problems, and mentoring. The section is about 42% of the examination.
  • Process: This section covers around 50% of the exam questions. It tests your understanding of methodologies for leading projects to success. Questions could include how to manage resources and how to schedule.
  • Business environment: This is around 8 percent of the examination. The section covers other areas that can affect a project, including compliance, change, and delivering value.

How to Earn PDUs and Maintain Certification

PMP certification requires continuous improvement to maintain the certification. You must earn professional development units (PDUs). They help professionals develop their skills and stay updated on the latest. The PDUs are calculated as one-hour blocks of time you spend improving your skills. This includes educational activities and giving back to the project management profession.

Project Management Professional Certification holders must earn 60 PDUs in a 3-year cycle. At least 35 PDUs must be in education and 25 in giving back. You must also earn eight or more PDUs in each skill area of the PMI Talent Triangle: Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Business Acumen.

So, how do you earn Education and Giving Back PDUs?

You can earn education PDUs through the following:

  • Reading - Claim self-directed reading relevant to the certification you hold for PDUs
  • Informal Learning - Participate in structured professional discussions with others. For example, engage in mentoring or "lunch and learn" sessions

Earn Giving Back to the Profession PDUs through the following:

  • Work as a Practitioner - earn PDUs by applying your knowledge and skills in a practical setting
  • Create Content - Write articles and blogs, create videos, and host webinars. Create any content and earn units.
  • Mentoring or Teaching - Spend and claim time towards teaching others
